We should be on the road by now, but if you know us at all, you know that we rarely get out when we originally planned. It hasn’t even been a month since we decided we would move back to Canada this summer. Nothing like trying to orchestrate a cross continantental, international move during a pandemic to keep you busy – oh ya, while working on top of all that.
And so, if all goes well tomorrow we will be going east once again. The first phase of our move is to get ourselves and our stuff to Bangor Maine. The added challenge was our car, since it is a fully electric car it isn’t something that can be easily driven that far and it isn’t something that can be towed. We arranged for a car transport, but we were not sure that was going to happen. Fortunately, the stars aligned and car carrier came by to pick up the car today. It should arrive in Bangor in about a week.
Our stuff is being shipped from California to Bangor in uboxes – they are crates that you pack yourself and uHaul transports them to their wearhouse at your destination. In our case, they are being transported to a wearhouse in Bangor Maine.
Now, with Covid, arriving in Maine will mean we need to quarantine – unless we are able to get a Covid test. With a negative covid test within 72 hours of arriving, we won’t be required quarantine. Hopefully in a weeks time we will still be able to get the covid test we have planned for. Fortunately, we have a backup plan too – so one of the two testing locations should work.
In Maine, we’ll need to get our van services (we have a couple of recalls that need doing, but it will also be happy for an oil change by then too). We will need to move all our stuff from the uBoxes into a uHaul truck (we have hired movers for that). Then we’ll need to also rent a uHaul trailer that will allow us to transport our car (towed behind the rental uHaul truck).
But first, we need to leave the house. Our first stop is up near Lake Tahoe someplace. We plan to disperse camp (that is free camping on BLM (federal) land. Our goal is not to see anyone but rather to experience some nature and hopefully still have cell coverage.
Wish us luck. I’ll try and keep you all up to date on this blog.
Congratulations on managing very complex logistics! I hope it all works as planned, but I have confidence that you’ll adapt and reconfigure if/when necessary.
